What are Keywords?

What are Keywords?

A keyword is a word or phrase entered into a search engine that helps describe what the person is looking for.

Website owners use keywords to help optimise the website’s content to help their site/content to be ranked at the top of search engine’s results and generate more traffic to the website.

How do you use keywords?

One of the most straightforward ways to use keywords is to make sure your website content, i.e your page titles, web text and other categories of webpages—are all worded in the same way that your potential audience composes their search engine queries.

By using your keywords in this way, when your website pages appear in the search results, they will reach those online visitors who searched using the same keywords or phrases.

You should do keyword research to make sure you are writing the right content for your website that will appeal to your customers.

What is keyword research?

Keyword research is finding the right keywords to target for your website content.

This research is finding and understanding the search terms that people enter into search engines.
The goals of keyword research is to use the resulting keywords, usually for search engine optimisation but also for other marketing opportunities.
Keyword research can help your business discover search queries to target, how popular these queries are, how difficult it is to rank for them, and more.

After you’ve finished your keyword research, try to make sure that you are following best practices:

  • Try and avoid keyword stuffing in your website content.
  • Use keywords naturally, like you would if you were talking.
  • Try and find long-tail keywords with reasonable competition
  • Learn how to place keywords
  • Use keyword research tools to identify new and alternative queries, see what your competitors are using, help you with ideas for new website content.

How do you use keywords?

Ideally, you want each page on your site to target unique keyword(s). Typically, your website homepage will be aimed at a very broad search term. As you create more pages, i.e product infromation, blog posts etc on your website, these normally drill down from general content to more specific content and target more specific keywords.
