Rural Broadband in the news again

Rural Broadband in the news again 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

So Wiltshire has announced another 6 lucky locations that will be getting “superfast broadband” and meanwhile over on the BBC News, there are claims of the taxpayer being “ripped off” over the cost of rolling broadband out to rural areas.

There are some “interesting” comments on the BBC page about City vs Rural living and why should the towns supplement the country which will either make your laugh or rant but that is an aside.

Hightrees Organisation is based in a rural location, out of choice.  It was accepted that Dial Up was the only way of connecting to the Internet  at the time,  in  the same way that having mains gas was also out of the picture (and still is).  Skip forward a couple of years and along came BT’s Home Highway offering an ISDN2e service which was actually affordable for domestic/small business use.  Online almost instantly and you can make phone calls at the same time, that was a novelty!

<geek note> Interestingly, we managed to break Home Highway and could make 3 calls instead of the maximum of 2 which had the BT Engineers highly confused and saying “but you can’t do that” – to the point they actually came out with some new test equipment, drank lots of tea and still couldn’t work out how 3 channels could be used at the same time.

Skip forward a year or two and ADSL was made available, luckily as the Home Highway line was new, it was a simple switch over to the new always on ADSL service.  There have been some major outages, not always technical or the fault of BT – for a few years on the trot, around autumn, the phone lines to the village would disappear for a few days as the local farmer tried to gain a few more inches when ploughing and would cut through the cable.

Other houses in the area are not so lucky and we blogged about the most recent example but there are at least 3 other examples of where service has been promised and then for “technical reasons” can not be provided.  As a result, Hightrees has shared (for no cost before we get in trouble with our ISP!) its connection to a couple of houses within WiFI range so they can at least do their internet banking and “day to day” online activities.

At least 5 people locally were taken in by the “mobile internet” dongles if you can’t get broadband- yes, they are great if you can get a decent mobile signal in your house but 2G is still painfully slow and expensive ! Chances of getting 3G anytime soon – slim, 4G – as soon as the pigs start flying :)

Now, there must be a master plan for the new roll-out across Wiltshire, whether this is based on “most technically challenging first” or “easiest first” is unknown and we  can’t say we’ve have seen any “technical” documents on line either so there are no guarantees that this roll-out will be the answer to all those who can’t currently get an ADSL service at present.  Does it take into account those people with DAC’s and line splitters on their lines ? Does it take into account line capacity at the cabinet/exchange for those that are not already on the telephone network, i.e those that can’t actually get a voice line at present or new builds or home offices ? How about antiquated BT equipment which is still in use and currently is uneconomical to upgrade ?

Our area is ear-marked for Late 2014, but with the constant push for more people to be online NOW -in terms of paying bills, tax returns, looking for jobs, online only offers, working from home etc, does this mean another 12 months of prospective broadband customers being told “Broadband is available” followed by 2 months of no service to then be told out “we can’t connect you” ?…..and then when all the shiny new kit is available and working it, will be “Hello Prospective Customer, please buy our wonderful service but we still can’t guarantee you the service ?

We’ve literally just been asked to by someone locally if we could find out if they can get a broadband service installed so that they can use all the features on their new Smart TV – after the recent hassles experienced with BT, we’re dreading making the call to find out !

Six more locations in Wiltshire are named to benefit from superfast broadband partnership

Six more locations in Wiltshire are named to benefit from superfast broadband partnership 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

Six more locations in Wiltshire are named as the latest to benefit from a multi-million pound superfast broadband partnership between Wiltshire Council, South Gloucestershire Council and BT.

They are Kington Langley, Castle Combe, Broad Town, Broad Hinton, Whiteparish and Salisbury.

The £35.6m project is rolling out fibre broadband to more challenging areas that fall outside the private sector’s commercial plans. Wiltshire Council has invested £15.5m into the project, South Gloucestershire £2m, and BT £12.8m. It has also benefitted from £4.6m from the UK Government’s Superfast Britain programme and £0.74m from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

This latest investment will make fibre broadband available for the first time in Kington Langley, Castle Combe, Broad Town, Broad Hinton and Whiteparish, while it will be expanding coverage in Salisbury, most of which already has access to the technology through BT’s commercial roll-out.

The first homes and businesses in these locations will be able to order fibre broadband by summer 2014.

The six latest locations join Royal Wootton Bassett, Purton, Alderbury and Downton which were announced earlier this year as the first communities to be included in the partnership’s roll-out plans. The partnership aims to make fibre broadband available to more than 10,000 Wiltshire homes and businesses by June 2014 and for 91 per cent of premises in the county to have access to superfast speeds of 24Mbps and above by the end of March 2016.

Wiltshire Council cabinet member for broadband, John Thomson, said:

“I am delighted that more communities in Wiltshire will soon be able to reap the benefits of having access to superfast broadband for the very first time.

“This project will have a hugely positive impact on those rural communities but also provide a big boost to local businesses and allow them to operate as effectively as possible. I am looking forward to announcing more Wiltshire communities who will benefit from this project in the near future”.

Bill Murphy, managing director of next generation networks for BT Group, said:

“This is another important milestone for a partnership which is making rapid progress. Working with our partners, we are able to bring this exciting technology to locations where the economics and engineering challenges are that much greater.

“High-speed fibre is increasingly important if local households and businesses are to make the most of the huge range of opportunities offered by the internet, whether they are seeking to start a new business, find new customers, undertake on-line training or simply wishing to browse for entertainment or leisure purposes.”

The project aims to lay nearly 1,500 kilometres of fibre cabling and install more than 300 new street cabinets.

VoIP Networking “fun” with Virgin Media Superhub

VoIP Networking “fun” with Virgin Media Superhub 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

Had a call from a client who had switched their broadband connection to Virgin Media running on cable at 30Mb.  The first Superhub they received blew up and the replacement unit had turned up but their previously working VoIP handset would no longer make or receive calls.

An onsite visit showed that once the VoIP Handset was rebooted it would successfully register to the VoIP service and receive calls, with no issues.  However when making a call, the handset would dial and then report “Call failed” and would hang up, yet the call would still progress and ring the number dialled.  An “interesting” aspect was that as soon as the call failed message was displayed, the Superhub would reboot itself !

A quick scour on the internet showed lots of similar problems and trying a range of port forwards, triggers, firewall settings made no difference to outgoing calls, this would always reset the router.  It turns out the client’s  AppleTV did this for a period of time before randomly deciding to behave itself.

A call to Technical Support was made and the only advice they could give was to switch to “Modem only” and use an additional router – strangely they went very quiet when I asked who was going to pay for the additional equipment.

Luckily we had a spare Linksys DD-WRT router kicking about, so this was wiped and installed for the client to test the use of Modem Only mode – one reboot later and everything is up and running !

The local Virgin Technical chap popped round with a replacement Hub to see if the same problem occurred – and it did so plans are underway to try and get hold of the next revision of the SuperHub for further testing.

Networking can be a weird and wonderful thing but we’ve never known network traffic to cause a piece of hardware to reboot !

Shapely cakes wanted to have a simple web site to act as an online presence/advert for their business.  We installed a basic WordPress site along with a template chosen by Shapely.

The site is fairly simplistic as it currently stands featuring a few image galleries to show some previously made cakes along with some of the questions that need to be answered before ordering.  The web site will be growing over time as News Items, Cake tips and more cake designs are added.

Why can it be so hard to get online ? Updated 26th September

Why can it be so hard to get online ? Updated 26th September 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

I had a call from a client saying that they were getting BT Broadband installed and could Hightrees give them a hand setting it up.  They had received their Home Hub and confirmation that the service was activated and live on 17th July – a nice simple job that would only take 30 minutes tops – how wrong can you be !

Saturday 19th July

The Home hub was plugged in and all powered up, but no there was no active connection.  The phone line was working, everything was plugged in the right places, login details seemed correct, just no ADSL service.

A call to BT Technical support led to the normal round of “Have you done….” questions” and the taking apart of BT faceplate to get to the Test socket, before Tech Support discover that, despite the written confirmation, there is no active ADSL service on that line ! This issue needs to be passed to Order Management who are not available after 6pm, so please call them on Monday

Time so far – 1.5 hours

Monday 22nd July 8:00am

Call to Order Management – despite have a Reference Number, the address and phone number, oh and the clients name, they wouldn’t talk directly to me.  So back to Tech Support, who could reference the notes from the weekend and then transferred me back  Order Management who would then talk to me.  Apparently, despite the written confirmation of an active service, this was not the case and it would be fast tracked, so within 24-48 hours the ADSL service would be activated.

Time : 45 minutes

We let the client know that the problem was being sorted, and to await confirmation from BT that everything was in hand.

Monday 22nd July : 15:00

Panic from the client as they had just received an email from BT saying that their Broadband had been cancelled – which is quite impressive as service hadn’t even started !Another call to BT to find out what was going – it turns out the email was sent in error, don’t panic, the broadband service will be activated.

Time : 40 minutes

Client receives confirmation that the service will be activated but not until 1st August, quickly followed by no, sorry the 2nd August.

2nd August – No service

6th August – Call from Client –  still no service, could Hightrees help get to the bottom of the problem ?

Armed with a large cup of tea, we duly started the “Get through to the right person”

Technical Support Department – Confirmation that there is no active service on the number and no ADSL product as it had been cancelled.  OpenReach were investigating an issue of incompatible services on the line.  I confirmed that there were no alarms, medical alert at the premises so any incompatible equipment must be on the BT side.  And it also raised the question –  if there is no order, why would engineers be working on a problem?)

But to get any further, you need to talk to Operations……very helpful again but no resolution !

Operations Department – explain the issue again – why has the order been cancelled, yet engineers are apparently working on a problem ?  Why has the customer not been updated ?  It transpires that there was a problem with the internal process and because the order wasn’t picked up it auto cancels !  Whilst the lady I spoke to was very helpful, I needed to talk to Order Management to get this resolved.

Order Management Department – gave the full run down again as well as all relevant references I had been given.  Got a confirmation that this was entirely an internal c*ck up and that within 48 hours the service will be online – guaranteed.  Quite a big statement, but assurances were given that by the weekend everything will be up and running.

Whilst we understand the need for feedback to try and improve Customer Service, after being on the phone for 1 hour and 13 minutes, after having been bounced through 3 different departments and having to repeat the same information, asking for feedback is probably not a wisest choice for ending a conversation !  Again, whilst the lady was very helpful, it didn’t actually resolve the problem, it just confirmed this was entirely an internal BT Issue with the customer being left in the dark without a clear, non technical explanation as to the problems and why there is still no service.

Time : 1 hour 13 minutes

Comment : Rural locations do have problems with getting a decent broadband service – one of the joys of living in the country and we fully accept that.  But Hightrees know of at least three other properties who had the same saga with BT to get their Broadband installed, to then be told after a considerable period of time, the phone line won’t support it and there is no capacity for a brand new line to be put in. Mobile phone service is at best 2g so that doesn’t offer a realistic alternative.

Monday 12th August – still no service – guess it will be another long winded telephone trip round the BT departments to get some answers !

Update : Well @BTCare picked up my tweet and read the blog and sent a form for submitting – no reply to date (13th August)

Monday 13th August

Another call to BT, reference number given and was told that the ETA for ADSL is the 20th.

Got the standard “the order failed and we need to progress it”  script, until it was pointed out that this was already known & the failure was initially caused by an Internal BT Process error, before an actual technical problem with line activation cropped up.

When pushed on what the actual problem is, apparently it is still under investigation and the report is not due till the 14th August !  Client and Hightrees expecting a call tomorrow by 6pm to explain :

a) What the problem is, in a clear, concise non technical way

b) What is going to be done to fix the problem

c) A realistic activation date

Time :  37 minutes

Update 22nd August

Well, no call from BT to Hightrees to explain what the situation is as promised.  One email sent to the client saying service by 20th, followed by another saying the 27th August.

No update on the Twitter Incident raised (as request by BT)

Guess it will be another long protracted call to try and get the next set of broken promises…..

22nd August 10:51am

Well guess what, BT tried to “jam” the order through the system and it failed, hence the revised date of the 27th August.

Apparently the “incompatible devices” on the line were incorrect TAGs which have apparently been rectified and the order has once again been re-submitted to the system  Another 48 hours (human time not automated so may be longer!) waiting to see if the order is accepted ! Provisional activation date now moved to the 30th August.

So far it appears that any “technical” issues with the line and getting ADSL activated have all been generated by BT order processing or internal “process” errors !

Time : 20 minutes

30th August 10:50am

Checked with the client that no information or service had been received before chasing this up.

This is now waiting upon an update from the “Engineers” which is due later today.  The problem (or should that be latest excuse) has now moved to “BT needing to do works”  before the “system” will accept the order, and the client is due to be contacted Monday or Tuesday next week.

Funnily enough,  still no update to the Twitter Incident ticket raised back on the 13th August

Comment : Whilst the BT staff appear to be very helpful and understanding, I don’t think they quite grasp a few things :

“There is a problem with your line or a device on it” – to an older/non technical customer, this implies they have done something wrong which isn’t the case and one of the reasons why we were asked to help get this matter sorted.

Moving the goal posts – if there is a technical problem that needs resolution stop making promises you can’t keep, i.e “don’t worry within 48 hours it will be sorted” , say “Sorry, it is a problem with our (i.e BT) equipment, we need to work on it before we can give you a realistic activation date.”

Time : 21 minutes

2nd September

via email to client

The Order I placed on Saturday 31.8.2013, failed to go through. Looking at your Account, I see you spoke to my colleague earlier today.

I’m sorry for the delay in getting your Broadband Service up and running. I’ve passed this to a dedicated team who are personally looking into this for you and they will update me by Thursday 5 September as to what action is going to be taken. Once I get this information, I will let you know.

6th September

via email to client

We’re sorry you no longer need your BT equipment.

If you’ve already sent your equipment back to us, or if you’ve arranged a free collection, you can ignore this email.

No cancellation by the client so they are extremely confused (as well as frustrated), could I ring BT again and try to get to the bottom of it

After speaking to BT on the telephone, breaks down as :

Once more it is automated email that is sent out, and the order hasn’t been cancelled

There is no update on the previously mentioned updates from the “Engineers”

“No you can’t be transferred to the Offline team”, “yes they can ring you”, “will that be today ?”,” Yes, within 48 hours !”

The conversation had to be ended there as there was a lack of patience and to be honest there are only so many times you can hear the same old story over and over again.

Comment : Automated processes can save  lot of time and effort, but in this case, with whatever technical difficulties are being encountered, why can this not be processed manually once the “system” is a state that will actually accept and process the order correctly, instead of all these confusing emails and broken promises to say “you will be activated in 48 hours”, followed by “Your order is cancelled”, followed by “Return your equipment” and then having to chase to get the actual situation ?

Not holding my breath on a call back, as the Twitter Incident is still open and there has been no response to that either !

12th September – Update from client – they’ve had enough, they are returning the BT equipment and are contacting their local MP to take the matter further !

26th September – The final update from BT to the Client!

I’m so sorry we cannot deliver our ‘Broadband’ Service to your Address. Believe me, we have tried everything to try and get you connected, but its just not possible.

and still no response to the Twitter incident that was raised either….

News roundup for July

News roundup for July 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

A quick roundup of what Hightrees has been up to during June and into July 2013

VoIP and Telephony Roundup

  • Ayrmer Software needed some modifications made to their in-house Asterisk server to allow remote access for when they are out of the office – a few quick modifications to the server set-up and installation of a free softphone (we used Zoiper) and they were up and running !
  • VoIP Billing – we did a quick review of one of our customer’s hosted VoIP PBX system and their call costs compared to the average monthly fee they were previously paying to a large telecommunications company – so far their call charges have been around 25% of what they were originally paying ! Average calls are working out at approx £15 per month as opposed to £64 !
  • Some new Aastra VoIP handset and DDI installations at Castledown Business Park for new tenants into their in-house VoIP Server
  • At Hightrees HQ we have been doing some experimentation with Virtual Machines and VoIP PBX Installations – so far, it all seems to be working !

Web Services Updates

  • The Tidworth and District Chamber of Commerce asked for an “empty” CMS system so that they could work on a new template and content for their website which was re-launched in July
  • A Google Analytics review of Wiltshire Concrete shows that their web traffic has increased 51% in the last year, along with increases in Page Views and Unique visitors.
  • Work is going on behind the scenes for the launch of a new online shopping website for an existing client – all hush hush at the moment !

IT Services and Support

  • Castledown Radio, who we volunteer our professional time for, had some issues with an old database which is used by the volunteers for live and off-air work.  A lengthly process was undertaken to identify the errors and a slightly more optimised version of the database was rolled out – the locking/timing issues are now greatly reduced.
  • Work is currently underway expanding and enhancing an existing site installation with extra VLAN’s and extra ADSL connections to provide greater scope for expansion along with increased resilience on internet connectivity.

Hightrees HQ Roundup

  • A RFQ (Request For Quote) has been submitted for a new project which is due to start August/September – fingers crossed ! We’d like to thank everyone who helped with equipment and service specification details.
  • Our VAT details finally got sorted – existing customers will have noticed that this month’s invoices are all setup to allow them to reclaim the VAT ! In case you need it, our VAT Registration is GB 164 7417 03
  • We currently working on an automatic signup for our VoIP services, giving you the flexibility to tailor your requirements, whether you need a small business VoIP system or a single soft phone “cheap calls” package – hopefully this will be on line shortly.

Revamped website for Ducis and Everleigh Village Show

Revamped website for Ducis and Everleigh Village Show 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

Hightrees Organisation Limited were asked if they could help the Ducis & Everleigh Village Show (DEVS) with updating their website.

The DEV’s organising committee recently won the Tesco Fundraising Prize at the Tidworth Community Area Awards 2011 and are very busy organising this years show which takes place on the 10th September 2011.

The previous website was perfectly okay, but it was written in static HTML and “sprawling” which made updating the whole site a little cumbersome and needed quite a lot of work behind the scenes to bring the site “up to scratch”  to include basic Search Engine information and  image/link information.

We created a new Joomla CMS (Content Management System) site and sample template design, based on the old site design, and then replicated the content into the new system and got approval to use the new revamped site.

The flexibility of using a CMS system, allowed Hightrees Organisation to copy the content, change formatting and design styles and manipulate pages and bring a sample site together in less than 24 hours.  We have introduced Google Analytics to new site for helping to track visitors and site usage along with some extra functionality such as slideshow facilities.

Interestingly, the previous hosting company had sent through payment renewals for both the domain name and the hosting.  We’re not completely sure how you can justify a £59 fee for renewing a .co.uk address for one year, but needless to say we transferred the domain to UKReg to reduce the renewal fees and also offered a better hosting deal at the same time !

The new Ducis and Everleigh Village Show website is now available at http://www.devshow.co.uk and will be updated regularly over the next few weeks as the plans and activities fot the Show are finalised.

Getting Ayrmer Software ready for 2011

Getting Ayrmer Software ready for 2011 150 150 Small Business IT Solutions

Thanks to the recent winter weather, getting down to Devon has proved a little tricky but that hasn’t stopped Hightrees Organisation from helping Ayrmer Software get ready for their new Sales Director, Vince McConville, who takes post in 2011.

We have remotely created the new emails addresses, new email aliases, reconfigured the Asterisk VoIP server wth new extensions and queue handling, added new VoIP handsets to the VoIP system as well as provided VPN Access, which has proved its worth in the last week where staff have been unable to get into the office.  The VPN access has allowed email and data access to the central server, allowing staff to work from home – in the warm !
